1845~1926. An English writer, journalist. His wife is Mary Ward, a novelist. He studied at Oxford and became a fellow of Brasenose college. He engaged in editing Times and The English Poets.
Walter Pater was a colleague of Ward at Oxford. In 1881, Vernon Lee and her friend Mary Robinson visited Oxford and met Mr. and Mrs. Ward.
When Lee visited Ward’s house at the Russell Square, she valued it as "the height of aesthetic desolation."（Colby, p.80.）
